Joseph Wheeler, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, looks at the 1840 journey of New York author Eliza Steele through this region, as the prairie she describes was about to disappear under the plow and attempts to answer the questions: who was Eliza Steele, where exactly was she in Cook, DuPage, Will and Kendall Counties and what does she tell us about the environment that can help us in our efforts to restore the tallgrass prairie today?
